Frequently Asked Questions / Fact Checking

  • I heard the landfill was a "done deal" - is that true?

    NO

  • Is the permit for initial 24 acres already approved?

    NO!

  • Can we rely on our elected officials to protect Winfield Elementary and the waters flowing into the Big South Fork?

NO!!! - help Cumberland Clear to see that the future remains clear for our region.

  • Can't the landowners just do what they want with their private land?

Not if it affects the welfare of the immediate neighbors who could be affected by loss of property values or businesses, AND of the whole region when the future costs to clean up the long-term problems caused by burying toxic substances has to be paid by locals who never profited by the sale or use of their land as a dump.

  • Why should I care if I don't live near the landfill or downstream of the waters or air it could pollute?

EVERYONE will be impacted by the potential damage done by this old, outdated and dirty business of burying waste. Economically and recreationally, the area relies on the natural beauty of the Cumberland River and its tributaries. Without it, the future of our area is very UN-Clear.

  • What can I do about it if the usual big names in the county are behind it - or the politicians don't seem to care enough to stop this unnecessary NEW Landfill?

Never underestimate the power of grass roots movements! Communities all over the state have had successful fights against bad business ideas like this one. Join Cumberland Clear and be heard and let us together show our leaders a better plan forward for good industries to develop in our area.
